"Owning an Experience"
I had been thinking about whether it was possible to re-edit the experience of owning a house. This is a renovation of an apartment room in central Nagoya, for which there is no client yet. It is a house that explores the boundary between an architect's fantasies and market demands, fictional yet realistic. I was looking for someone who could mediate such a house.
"Adornment and Ornamentation"
Adornment (jewelry) imbues the body with beauty and meaning, while also redefining physicality. When you put a ring on your finger, you become acutely aware of the shape of your finger and the shape of your body. To achieve balance, or to intentionally disrupt it, you layer other adornments (jewelry). The fantasies never cease, as we continue to discover beauty and meaning.
Renovation redefines structure. By renovating, one becomes keenly aware of the existing building's structure. Renovation is undertaken to achieve balance, or to disrupt it. The act of renovating, which constantly discovers the beauty of existing architecture and imbues it with different meanings, is similar to the relationship between the body and adornment. Renovation that does not intervene with the structure seems to ornament the architecture. Adornment and ornamentation redefine beauty and connect disparate things. They are also devices that mediate meaning.
"The Experience of Home"
Home is a special place. It is a place to distance oneself from society, shed various accoutrements, and confront oneself and one's family. It is also a place where one repeatedly reflects and transforms in order to face society again. To re-weave such an experience of home through material things. I want to re-edit the very experience of owning a home.
"Exhibition and Viewing"
"ISIR's jewelry" and "renovation of an apartment room by ow." The exhibition and viewing of these are layered simultaneously. The jewelry and belongings of the two ISIR artists, and the renovation and belongings by ow, imbue the house with multiple realities. Take off your shoes at the entrance, hang your coat in the closet in the bedroom, flip through reference books in the study, pick up jewelry while drinking something in the living room, and engage in dialogue. The experience of owning will bring forth a slightly different self than before. Just as the experience of owning jewelry can be enriched, I believe that the experience of owning a home can also be enriched.
